This homeowner loves vines and wanted a design for her front yard landscaping that would allow for outdoor dining, relaxing, and vines, herbs, and vegetable gardening. The site conditions were challenging due to the pie-shaped lot, building codes, coastal condition and local deer.
The front yard landscaping gets the best sun which is needed for the types of plants the homeowner wanted to grow. Weak sun due to coastal fog and salt-laden winds were problems, along with local codes limiting the fence height to 3' which are easily jumped by local deer. The solution? A windbreak of yew plants and bamboo tee pees, which provide support for the vines, and discourage deer from jumping the fence to eat the plants!
The landscape design needed to include a seating area and a separate space for vegetable gardening. A mortared flagstone path from the street to the front door is part of a larger flagstone patio that is surround beds for flowering perennials and herb plants. The foundation plant bed is filled with Rose plants and Bougainvillea. Window boxes with installed and planted with colorful annuals to add even more charm to this Victorian home.
Custom raised beds and cold frames were the foundation of the new vegetable garden. All were gopher-proofed with 3/4" galvanized hardware cloth before the soil was added. The raised beds and cold frames were not planted. These pre-prepared beds allow the homeowner to their vines, herbs and plants for vegetable gardening at their leisure.
Both the raised beds and cold frames were built with inset lighting, and surrounded with gravel pathways. The photo (above) shows the small landscape lighting that illuminates the gravel pathway at night.
The landscape plants for the outside of the perimeter fencing were a mix of California native plants and flowering perennials. A grape arbor was installed at the front entry. A second arbor was installed to support the existing banana passion vine and a third arbor installed in the backyard to support a two-story climbing rose.
The new front yard landscaping design now provides the perfect blend of working garden and relaxing patio spaces!
