These two homeowners are busy professionals that were looking for low maintenance back yard landscaping design. They wanted a patio garden with multiple seating areas, direct access from the indoor to outdoor dining room, strong use of color, using fragrant, pet-friendly plants that would attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
The design for the new back yard landscaping included some changes to the house. The window to the dining room was replaced with French doors and the old slider with four small windows. A pergola was created to provide sun protection and privacy for the outdoor patio dining area. The back walls of the house were painted cobalt blue to allow the homeowner to use them for theatrical lighting effects.
A second patio seating area was created off the den. New stucco raised bed plants with built-in low voltage landscape lighting are shown in the photo above with colorful Lantana and fragrant Chocolate Cosmos plants.
A 2' lattice border was added to the existing fence to create privacy from the next door neighbor. A central in ground planting bed featured a Trevi garden fountain, dwarf Phormium, Summer Gold Agapanthus and Ground Morning Glory plants.
The garden design also included a Wisteria arbor with hanging baskets and small down-lights around the existing hot tub to create a third entertaining space. Ladies Mantle, dwarf Plumbago, Cape Fucshia and Hydrangea were the shade plants used in this garden. Various Salvia plants, Lavender Trumpet Vine, and Day Lilies were some of the full sun bedding plants used in the new garden.
The new back yard landscaping provides the homeowners with three entertaining spaces and a nice mix of colorful low maintenance plants that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Axis views were designed for each room of the house and the design provides a nice blend of all the project goals.
