Koi Pond Water Garden

cache/wst.opf.320518.xml

This project is located on a coastal bluff. The lot was undeveloped and the primary goal of the homeowner was to created a large garden pond and waterfall as the focal point in a new landscape.

The site needed a great deal of grading and excavating to make room for this large  pond and double waterfall feature.  Originally, Koi and plants were not part of the project. They were later added to complete the ecosystem and reduce maintenance, specifically algae bloom.

A mortared bluestone patio with an in-ground, curved gas fire pit was installed along the back wall of the house. A curved bluestone seat wall mirrors the curve in the firepit, providing additional patio seating or seating that overlooks the pond and the ocean beyond it.

A small lawn sits next to the patio and a wide pathway winds down the slope past a second observation patio of loose, inter-planted paving stones.

The waterfall on each level of the pond gently circulate the water and provide additional oxygen for the Koi. A stone walkway crosses the center of this water feature, providing a different perspective, close up observation of the Koi, and a convenient vantage point for maintenance.

Koi and water plants are slowly being added to complete the ecosystem in this backyard water garden.

The plants selected for this garden had to be wind tolerant and blend in with the bluff. A variety of small succulents and ground cover plants were selected to add visual interest and texture between the paving stones on the small round observation patio and the large bluestone path that winds down the hillside.
