Japanese Style Cat Garden

"One of Laurie's great skills is her ability to ask the right questions, and then really listen to what you say - so you wind up with a yard designed to perfectly match your specific needs and desires."

This Japanese style cat garden began with a large concrete patio and dirt. The homeowner has several cats, including feral rescues. One of the project goals was to create a safe haven to entice the cats to stay in and around the yard.

The concrete patio needed to stay, so it was stained and the rotting wood borders replaced with gravel. The large hedge and vine plants along the fences also needed to stay, so they were trimmed and kept.

A garden design was created that included a cat statue, new back porch and connecting boardwalk that would look at home in a Japanese style garden.  A stepping stone path connects the boardwalk to the concrete patio. A small dry stream winds through the yard and is bordered by sea thrift plants.

A bubbling rock fountain provides a source of fresh drinking water that any cat would find irresistible. One the other side of the patio, a small wooden bridge, in keeping with Japanese style, connects the patio to the walkway along the side of the house.

Several decorative containers were chosen for this project, including a large one for a Japanese camellia. A Japanese Maple tree was planted near the deck and a variety of cat-friendly coastal plants were used on this project; including sea thrift, catmint, teucrium, New Zealand flax and Japanese forest grass, among others.

The project was a success and the cats are staying in the yard, sunning themselves on the deck, and rolling in the cat-friendly plants! The cat garden statue marks the entry to the garden, and the homeowner now has a great view from the home office.
