The front yard landscaping on this charming house was overgrown, unhealthy and lacking in curb appeal. The homeowner's favorite color is orange and the Bird of Paradise plant in front of the living room window was kept as a focal point for the new design.
The homeowner wanted to maintain the privacy afforded to them by the old front yard landscaping while improving the curb appeal of their corner lot. The lawn was dominating the front yard landscaping and consuming a lot of water. The lawn was downsized to reduce water use and make room for additional plants. A flagstone pathway was installed to connect the sidewalk to the side yard for garden maintenance.
The new design called for removal of the hedge plants surrounding the stucco wall. A custom built redwood lattice panel fence was installed on top of the courtyard's stucco surround and vines were planted on both sides of the courtyard wall.
The plants used in the new design included Bougainvillea, Kangaroo Paw, New Zealand Flax, Japanese Forest Grass, Black Magic Taro, Society Garlic, Day Lilies, Paraguay Nightshade and Cordyline.
When fully grown, the plants will present an interesting mix of color and texture. Most of the plants used are waterwise after one to two seasons, and the reduction in lawn size should result in lower water bills.
Now this corner house has the curb appeal the homeowner was looking for. They continue to hear from neighbors and passersby how nice their landscaping looks!
