The backyard of this house was split on two levels. The homeowner wanted a low maintenance garden design that would make better use of the yard, while providing privacy for the hot tub, extend the entertaining space from the newly remodeled kitchen and be family and pet friendly.
With a very active family (two teens, their friends, and pets) the garden would need to have multiple seating areas, low maintenance pet friendly plants and some privacy from the family room.
The old fence was removed and pushed back 8' to the property line. A structural retaining wall with geo-grid was installed. The property boundary fences were replaced by an alternate slate design to allow air-flow to the garden beds, while protecting them from browsing deer and high winds blowing through the canyon. The raised bed was planted with Podocarpus, Rockrose and Lantana to screen the hot tub from the uphill neighbors.
The old lawn was removed and a paver patio was installed with small built-in beds for the plants. A low lattice fence hides the lower level patio and dog run.
A small observation deck was added on the slope to take advantage of the canyon views and create a private entertainment space that is shielded from the house by the existing patio tree. A privacy screen and trellis was added to screen the view of the hot tub from the house. Low maintenance plants were then installed, including Agapanthus, Mexican Sage, and Day Lilies making this the perfect garden for this active family.
